About the Artist:
Carina Vargas-Nuñez is a multidisciplinary artist who employs paint and textiles to delve into the tapestry of identity, disability, and family history. Born with a rare condition called VACTERL syndrome, Carina has used artistic expression from a young age to process their experience with disability, and envision worlds outside of the constraints imposed by their complex health challenges. This world building has continued into their practice today, where Carina uses bright colors and defined lines to illustrate narratives aimed at better understanding their sense of self. Through elements of symbolism and magic realism, the images Carina constructs are crafted from stories of their family’s migration from Cuba, their journey with queerness, and their history with cultural mythology and spirituality. Carina is currently based in Chicago, IL.
About The Exhibition
In mano a mano, Nunez explored a combination of familial and spiritual folklore inspired by oral history of their family’s experience living in Caimanera, Cuba, a small town on the southern end of the island that borders the U.S. naval base on Guantanamo. Works also layer religious mythology derived from their family’s catholic roots, and is infused with emblems of santeria and magical realism.Nunez uses these stories and expressions to confront themselves, their family history, and their experiences navigating religion. Certain animal and object motifs, such as the blue scorpion, snakes, mangos, and alligators, are prevalent in their work and can be traced back to tales of what has been handed to them from generations before.

About the Artist:
St. Louis based artist Vaughn Davis Jr. creates paintings that are manipulated through the use of deconstructive methods. These paintings take note from the philosophies of Wabi-Sabi, Afro-Pessimism and question American Craft traditions. This process becomes a metaphor for violence, care and mistreatment. In his work, Davis Jr. is exploring beauty and chaos and struggle and success.
Through the use of unfurled, sheets of unprimed canvas he creates paintings in the expanded form through abstractions which are then deconstructed into forms. Methods of tearing and cutting compose the picture plane. These works are layered with an arsenal of media including dye, dry pigment, acrylic and oil paint. In many regards, he expresses the outliers of the painting process through these elements. They are predicated upon the dismantlement of the picture plane and the deconstruction of the painting process.
Davis Jr. received his BFA with Departmental Honors in Sculpture from Webster University in St. Louis. Recent museum exhibitions include a solo presentation at the Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO. He has been awarded the Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. His work has been exhibited at Dragon Crab Turtle, Monaco Gallery, The Luminary in St. Louis MO, Gazebo Gallery, Kent, OH; among others. He has had solo exhibitions at Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Philip Slein Gallery and the Center of Creative Arts both located in St. Louis. and was included in the group exhibition, “A Magical Day at Ditch!” at Tripoli Gallery, Wainscott, NY, curated by St. Louis-based painter, Katherine Bernhardt.

About the Artist:
A Chicago and Milwaukee native, Buie earned her BA from Western Illinois University and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has attended artists-in-residency programs, such as the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, LA, The Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY, the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, Project 1612 AIR in Morton, IL. and Hotel Pupik in Schrattenberg, AUT. Buie has received numerous awards such as; an emerging artist Mary L. Nohl Fellowship in 2012, the Love of Humanity Award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the prestigious Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant in 2015, the 2019 Kresge Artist Fellowship in the Visual Arts, the 2019/2020 Grant Wood Fellowship in Printmaking at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA, the 2020 Fellowship.art award, a top accelerator award/program funded through gener8tor, and the 2023 Ruth Arts/Mary L Nohl Alumni Award.
Buie has mounted several solo exhibitions including solo exhibitions: Embodiment(s) at the Freeport Art Museum, Freeport, IL, Re/Faced at the South Bend Museum of Art, South Bend, IN, Improvisations, The Alice Wilds, Milwaukee, WI, and Input/Output, Materia Gallery, Detroit, MI. She has contributed to many group exhibitions including A Contemporary Black Matriarchal Lineage in Printmaking Exhibition at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, MN, Printmaking in the Twenty-First Century at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, MI, Homebody at the Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI, The Black Biennial: Sonder at RISD’s Chace Center Gallery, Providence, RI, and All in the Family at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington, KY. Buie has also maintained a connection to the community by hosting printmaking workshops and demonstrations throughout the country. Her works have been acquired by major institutions and private collections both nationally and internationally, and has been reviewed on Hyperallergic.com and featured on Essay’d.com and New American Paintings No. 155. Currently, Buie is an Associate Professor in Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI.

About Jairo Granados-Cardenas
Jairo Granados-Cardenas is a self-taught film photographer whose captivating work reflects a profound connection to both his Mexican roots and the vibrant cultural tapestry of his current home in Chicago, IL. Born in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico, Jairo spent his formative years immersed in the dynamic fusion of his Mexican heritage and the distinctive atmosphere of a Mexican-American household in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Despite lacking formal training, Jairo's artistic journey has been defined by an innate ability to capture the essence of human experiences through the lens of his camera. His evolving perspective is shaped by a keen understanding of composition, an astute mastery of color, and a unique flair for storytelling. These elements converge seamlessly in his photographs, creating a visual language that transcends cultural boundaries and resonates with viewers on a profound level.
About The Exhibition:
Inspired by the fleeting moments of everyday life and the mundane, Granados-Cardenas presents a series of diptych and triptych photographs revealing the intimacies of his surroundings, seen through the lens of his point and shoot camera — the condensation on a shower handle alongside the dewy skin of a lover, or the neon lights of a flower shop in technicolor documented at one am on a late night walk home.
For Granados-Cardenas, a soft gaze or at times, deep contrasts within their work serve as signifiers of memories and observations that are fleeting. For one moment the instance is here, another it’s not, but what matters most is that distinct inclination to pause and take it in.
